Houbichiku, the most valuable type of soot bamboo, is smoked thin and thick nemagari bamboo, which grows only in cold regions such as tohoku and shinshu. The deep luster that soot permeates to the inside is obtained over a long period of time. Fragile houbichiku is much more difficult to handle than regular bamboo, and requires a lot of time to make, soaking it in boiling water many times to soften it while carefully weaving it with advanced techniques. 2th Chikuunsai Tanabe was good at rough weaving using houbichiku.
