Rokuro Nakamura 1914 – 2004
Rokuro Nakamura was born in Inbe, Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture.
Until the end of the war, he worked for a company, but in 1945 he became a disciple of Kaneshige Toyo and fully committed himself to the path of pottery.
In 1961, he established his own kiln, “Rokuro Kiln,” and became independent.
In 1986, he was certified as a Traditional Craftsman and received the Okayama Nichinichi Newspaper Award.
In 1989, he was honored with the Order of the Blue Paulownia Leaves (Seventh Class).
His unaffected personality is reflected directly in his work, and he was known as a hearty drinker who loved sake with unreserved devotion. The appeal of Nakamura Rokuro’s creations lies in the sense of freedom that permeates them, and his forms—born from an intimate understanding of the drinker’s heart—are unparalleled. In the realm of sake vessels, he is highly esteemed as the foremost master, affectionately called “Rokuro of the Tokkuri.”
