The name of our shop “TENPYODO”, comes from the Tenpyo culture of the Nara period（710-794）, which was strongly influenced by the Tang dynasty（China）and the Western Regions, and created a golden age of art in Japan.

I became involved in art because of my father, who was an antique art dealer. I was born when my father was 44 years old. Being an antique art dealer involves a lot more physical labor than it looks. You have to carry delicate works of art by hand, and at art fairs and other events, you have to set up and take down booths, which requires a lot of physical strength.

After graduating from high school, I went on to university for a while. However, as I was helping my father, I decided that I wanted to support my elderly father, whose physical strength was waning, as much as possible, rather than spending four years in university vaguely. So I dropped out of university after one year and entered the antique art industry.

My father passed away in January of 2018, but he showed me the ropes of the art industry and how to be an art dealer for about 20 years. This still forms an important core in my life.

Beauty enriches our minds and adds color to our lives. In Hakata, which has served as a gateway to continental culture since ancient times, we aim to be a shop that can pass on culture and tradition to future generations, valuing each encounter between “people and things” and “people and people.”

We would like to deal in works of art that are exciting and appealing, and that resonate with the senses.
