(Design Commentary)
Around 2300 BC, an urban civilization emerged along the Indus river in what is now pakistan. Food such as barley and wheat, as well as cotton, were grown along the riverside, and cotton cloth was the best material for clothing, on par with chinese silk. The Indus civilization collapsed after about 800 years due to the deterioration of the natural environment caused by deforestation and the invasion of foreign tribes. However, memories of the rich forests were passed down in the form of animal design such as elephants and tigers, and were transmitted across the sea to java around the 5th century. Cotton cloth and animal design introduced from india were combined in java to form the alas-arasan design, which means forest, and was used to decorate the wedding costumes of the royal family. This work was inspired by the chintz design and depicts the mystery of the forest, the source of life, using gosu and gold colors.
