Karatsu ware is a pottery baked in the hizen region centered on the karatsu domain.
The name comes from being shipped from karatsu port.
It is highly regarded as tea utensils, as it is said to be “one Raku, two Hagi, three Karatsu”.
This land was under the control of Chikashi Hata, When it is smashed from Hideyoshi Toyotomi in 1593 by failure of the japanese invasions of korea, It became the territory of Hirotaka Terazawa and karatsu domain was established.
The earliest founding in karatsu is kishidake kilns.
Kishidake was the place of Mr. Hata, With the change, the potters broke up in various places of hizen.
Mr. Hata’s change and kishidake kilns out of business, It is one of the evidence that karatsu ware has been made since before 1593.
The origin of Karatsu ware is considered to be around Tensho(1573-92)from excavation and research.
Even though the creation period was around Tensho, karatsu ware was said to have started as the japanese invasions of korea, and made many excellent works from Momoyama to early Edo period.
The works from Momoyama to early Edo period are called “Old Karatsu”.
Karatsu ware is mostly made as a daily necessities of the general people, The tea people used to make tea utensils.
This simplicity is also a great attraction of karatsu ware.
Some of them are ordered by tea person,There are few and has high evaluation.
A big incident occurs in the 17th century.
Risanpei discovered izumiyama potters stone and succeeded in making porcelain.
The expansion of production of imari ware had a great effect on the decline of karatsu ware.
In the early Edo period, there is a feature in Nisai garatsu, The attraction of old karatsu has been lost.
